Press Release: MAURER'S GRAND RESTAURANT SELECTION 2008 published

28. 11. 2007

Grand-Restaurant 2008 The 11th edition of MAURER'S GRAND RESTAURANT SELECTION (published by MauMau) is now available on the Czech book market and online.

This selection of the best and the most interesting restaurants in the Czech Republic is put together on the basis of the independent assessments of voluntary and anonymous food critics who, at their own cost, visited and rated 437 eateries this year. The new edition includes 8,600 assessments from 533 critics who munched on CZK 6,541,148 worth of food over the course of the year.

The order of the Top 10 differs considerably from that of last year, and the old favourites don't appear at the top this time. The overall winner for 2007 was the family-run Prague restaurant U Lípy (At The Lime Tree), which has been open for 19 years.

New this year is the Top 10 selection by 25 chefs, food critics and food experts, including the TV presenter Radek John, the journalists Libor Ševčík and Vladimír Poštulka and the chef Jiří Král. Their recommendation for best restaurant is Allegro - Four Seasons.

Also featured are the Top 10 local wines according to the acclaimed sommelier Ivo Dvorak (an 11-times winner of sommelier contests in the Czech Republic and Czech representative in the World and European Championships for sommeliers) and a selection of Top Beer, recommended by Vaclav Berka (senior brewer at Pilsner Urquell).

Those familiar with this guide will know that it is more than a comprehensive list of restaurants in the Czech Republic. Each entry contains information on the speciality of the house, the kind of cuisine offered and whether consideration is shown for children and pets. The average price of a meal for one with drinks at each restaurant is also given. The most important thing, of course, is the grade which has been awarded for the food, service and interior. Restaurants are assessed on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is excellent and 5 is poor.

The main project partner is Mattoni.

More>>

More>>

GOURMET POLICIE

Pokud lidé upřímně prozradí, co jeden konkrétní den jedli, gourmet policie jim zase upřímně řekne, co si o jejich jídelníčku myslí.

Co jí Pavel Maurer...

Surprising hotels? „Lobsters Invasion“ attracted hundreds of gourmets to Corinthia Towers. About 1 tonne of fresh lobsters was eaten. Popular chef Zd. Pohlreich prepared exclusive Czech Cuisine Nouvelle degustation. U Kastelána in Brno they use advantage of one cook’s japanese experience to prepare sushi evenings. And Mr. Petříček chef of Černý kohout restaurant made „Roman Kitchen“ by old Rome recipies. What about: Date salat with tuna, eggs and virgin olives as a starter?

Everyone’s enthusiastic about the medieval tavern Středověká krčma! Me included, and my children who love skulls, instruments of torture and dungeons. The food is edible but the atmosphere is truly unique and the staff are friendly and unbelievably fast. This place has style. The medieval lingo may seem a tad coarse, but it has a certain poetical quality. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked: “What d’ye want to scoff, ye peasant?”. Or if you’re offered “Goats’ Piss” instead of non-alcoholic beer or “Water from the Stream” instead of Mattoni. But if you get into game, you’ll have fun. And maybe you won’t mind the odd bit of burnt meat… It’s a one-of-a-kind place.
